A moment of magic from Juan Veron stood out on a scintillating night of stars at Old Trafford.

Veron's superb 20-yard chip as he raced onto David Beckham's return pass was the defining moment of a Manchester United display which exuded class from every pore.

Arsenal may be capturing the headlines with their thrilling performances but ask any dispirited Olympiakos defender, Sir Alex Ferguson's men have not lost their cutting edge.

With Veron, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs all in outstanding form, the Greeks' visit to the Theatre of Dreams turned into a nightmare, their task made even harder by the needless dismissal of Ze Elias just before the break.

Giggs bagged a brace either side of Veron's stunning effort and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer netted the fourth late on to give United their third successive Group F win and put them into what their own manager admitted was 'the qualification comfort zone' in his pre-match programme notes.

The brilliance of United's flowing first-half even managed to obliterate any worries over the absence of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

With five goals already in Europe this season, the £18.5million Dutchman is the man Sir Alex Ferguson needs most of all.

Ferguson is committed to nursing van Nistelrooy through his current hamstring problem and left him out of his squad altogether this evening, although the chances were that if his team had desperately required victory, his name would have been on the teamsheet.

As it was, Scholes continued in a more advanced role supporting Solskjaer with Giggs and Veron providing an extra thrust when possible, which turned out to be quite often, far too often in fact for Olympiakos.

Giggs has enjoyed an injury-free start to the campaign and as a result his form is approaching its peak.

His sizzling wing play had the Greeks in trouble almost from the first whistle and with Veron pushing further to the left, the link was irresistable.

Given the rampant nature of United's play down the side, the only surprise about their opener was that it came from the right.

Solskjaer set the move in motion, turning the ball to Scholes after taking possession with his back to goal.

The cross was perfect for Giggs, who couldn't finish at the first attempt, but managed it at the second.

In itself it was a sweet move but compared to what was to follow from Veron it was mere Sunday morning park stuff.

The Argentinian has had more than his fair share of critics since his £28.1million arrival from Lazio.

His presence, it is suggested, wrecks United's tried and trusted midfield formula. Not tonight it didn't, and of Old Trafford's established heroes, only Roy Keane was missing.

Veron's finish tonight was pure brilliance, leaving Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos completely stranded with a deft piece of skill few can match.

To their credit, Olympiakos did not wilt as it appeared they might and Ghanaian striker Peter Oforiquaye should have brought them back into it when he was set free by Stelios Venetidis.

However, instead of following Veron's lead and hitting it first time, the young striker opted to dribble into the box and allowed Mikael Silvestre to block his path to goal, Nicky Butt muscling into to rob him of possession completely.

As demolition jobs go, this was about as complete as they come. Beaten twice by United last season and without an away win in 19 Champions League ventures, Olympiakos decided to kick their way out of trouble - or at least kick Veron.

To be fair, the Argentinian lured them into it by hacking down Par Zetterberg. Retribution for that challenge was swift as Georgios Anatolakis responded with a two-footed challenge which brought the second yellow card. Former Middlesbrough man Christian Karembeu hacked down Scholes by the right touchline to get another.

But Ze Elias beat them all for crudeness in stoppage time with a woeful tackle over the ball which left referee Gilles Veissiere with little alternative other than instant dismissal.

After that flurry of activity the start of the second period seemed somewhat mundane. Rio Ferdinand followed Veron into the book, harshly it appeared, for a foul on ineffective Olympiakos skipper Predrag Djordjevic.

The lull was ended when Giggs got his name on the scoresheet in a bizarre manner, his cross from the left touchline flicking off Georgios Anatolakis to leave Eleftheropoulos helpless as it entered the net from the acutest of angles.

By now, Olympiakos were chasing shadows, particularly Scholes, who given the extra space, was starting to relish his new role.

It was his pass which gave Solskjaer the opportunity to net his fourth of the campaign. Scholes was immediately substituted, but his confidence - as well as United's - had received a significant boost.

Manchester United may still be struggling for top form but their character could not be questioned as Ruud van Nistelrooy came off the bench to inspire them to a spirited comeback at Charlton.

When Claus Jensen had given Charlton
the lead just before the break, it had looked as though further question marks would be raised over United's ability to keep pace with Arsenal.

After all, it was at The Valley that the Gunners had swept convincingly to a 3-0 win a fortnight ago, before increasing the pressure with an accomplished triumph at Elland Road earlier in the day.

However, Paul Scholes made an immediate impression on his early return from injury to draw United level on 53 minutes after a dynamic display.

And then Ryan Giggs clinched victory as he made the most of van Nistelrooy's unselfish pass after the Dutchman had come on as a second-half substitute.

Van Nistelrooy made sure of victory with a late header and United were able to secure their fourth consecutive win at home and abroad since their back-to-back defeats by Leeds and Bolton.

With van Nistelrooy initially on the bench after his midweek hamstring injury, Ferguson had picked Diego Forlan but then strangely did not play him up front.

Instead, the striker was out on the right, while Scholes returned from knee surgery to fill a roaming brief behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with David Beckham being moved into central midfield.

It was supposed to be a fluid formation but, apart from Scholes, United were largely struggling to find their rhythm in the first-half.

They certainly had their chances, but Solskjaer's first touch let him down and Scholes was then denied by Richard Rufus' superb goal-line clearance after a sparkling one-touch move involving Beckham and Giggs.

However Charlton, who had threatened first with Jason Euell smashing a half-volley wide, remained undaunted and started to grow in stature.

Shaun Bartlett, who was making his first start since December after injury, was denied by the outstretched legs of Fabien Barthez and then ballooned the ball over the bar from close range after a knock-down by John Robinson.

Robinson visibly showed his frustration on that occasion but he reacted in the best possible way.

Within two minutes, he set Jensen steaming through the centre and, having dipped his shoulder to create space, the Denmark international unleashed an inch-perfect effort which curled into the top corner.

Beckham's reaction was rather less exemplary, earning himself a caution for a hot-blooded late tackle on Jensen.

However, the principle danger for Charlton was that while pressing in search of a second goal, they always left themselves open to United hitting them on the break.

And so it proved on 53 minutes as Giggs again opened them up, this time down the left flank, before crossing to Scholes to bury his shot from six yards out.

Ferguson almost immediately brought on van Nistelrooy for Forlan, moving Scholes back into central midfield and Beckham out to the right flank.

Still United were at their most dangerous on the counter-attack, with O'Shea haring down the right flank before crossing for Giggs to flick his header just inches past the far post.

The combination of Giggs and Scholes were at work again soon afterwards, only for Kiely to produce an acrobatic save.

However, Charlton could not keep out United forever.

A long throw-in by Gary Neville was inadvertently flicked inside by Rufus and van Nistelrooy sped away before crossing for Giggs, who was standing unmarked in the area.

The Welshman calmly jinked inside Kiely before slotting his shot into the net and he returned the favour in the last minute to cross for van Nistelrooy to head home United's third.

And so it was Charlton who were left to lick their wounds, with a fourth consecutive home defeat of the season, while United's mini-comeback continues.
